San Diego police are reporting that a 16-year-old boy was killed in a hit-and-run crash near Antigua Boulevard on Santo Road. According to local officials, the unidentified victim was walking along a median in the center of the road with a friend when a driver heading southbound stuck the teen.

The driver of the car has not been identified and was reportedly speeding when the incident occurred. The victim’s friend, also 16 and unidentified, was left uninjured, while the victim was killed at the scene. After the driver had struck the victim, the driver sped off without offering any aid.

After some investigation, local police resolved that the vehicle was a black four-door car. Descriptions lead them to believe it may be a Ford Taurus with damage on the front of the driver’s side. The assailant has not been found.

Tragically, hit-and-run crashes are alarmingly common in the United States. According to crash data by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, hit-and-run crashes account for nearly 1,500 traffic deaths every year. Pedestrians are the most common victims in these crashes, accounting for an alarming six out of 10 victims. Studies suggest that these numbers have been on the rise in recent years with no signs of dropping.

Reckless and distracted driving are primary causes of hit-and-run accidents: assailants who flee the scene often do so in fear of legal action. While the accidents are often unintentional, leaving the scene is a crime.

Even those lucky enough to escape a hit-and-run accident are often left with catastrophic injuries, responsible for costly medical expenses and a changed way of life.
