According to Victorville authorities, a hit and run accident has claimed the life of 63-year-old Victorville resident Christine Acuna, with the diver still at large and nowhere to be found. The accident occurred at Lorene and 7th avenue where Acuna was crossing before being struck down by a northbound maroon sedan. After striking lacuna down, the car simply sped off, leaving the police hot on the trail.

Local authorities say the driver immediately fled the scene, leaving little to no trace beyond some general descriptions of the vehicle that was being used; a maroon sedan. Acuna was rushed to a Victor Valley Global Medical Center immediately, however despite their best efforts, injuries sustained in the incident proved too damaging. She was pronounced dead at 9:19 p.m. by the San Bernardino Coroner’s office.

Police have tried locating the vehicle, but nothing concrete has yet to be found. A further investigation has led to a vehicle, which had been spotted in the parking lot of a liquor store with damages similar to what would’ve been caused in the incident. The make, model, and even color also match the car from the accident, though that still can’t be confirmed. Police have a suspect temporarily detained but the investigation is ongoing. The road where the incident occurred was closed for over seven hours before reopening.

Hit and run crimes are among the most prevalent occurrences in the United States. According to research conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, well over 1,500 people are killed in hit and run accidents annually in California alone. Over 60% of those victims are pedestrians. True to form, statistic patterns suggest the amount of people killed in hit and run accidents will like. Though pedestrians are largely affected in these accidents, it’s important to remember that pedestrians and their families do have rights. A hit and run can be physically damaging be it temporarily or permanently. If someone loses his or her life in one of these accidents, it can be emotionally devastating, all at the hands of someone who’s very quickly just drove off.
