Tragedy struck at a crosswalk in East Long Beach as a pedestrian was killed by an oncoming SUV. Long Beach Police Department officials have stated that an unnamed 57-year-old man was crossing the street at the corner of Spring Street and Bellflower Boulevard at around 8:30 a.m. when an also unnamed 18-year-old driving a 2006 Saturn Vue struck down the pedestrian. Authorities state that the the victim had attempted to cross even though the pedestrian traffic signal had displayed instructions to wait. The Vue had the right of way in the situation.

The driver of the Vue reportedly cooperated with authorities and supplied details of the incident at the scene without fleeing. In most cases like this, drug and alcohol tend to be expected. However, nor drugs or alcohol appear to play a part in the car accident according to local authorities. Paramedics had eventually arrived at the scene and immediately rushed the victim to a local hospital for further treatment. The victim remained in the hospital in critical condition for some time, but despite best efforts, he ultimately died as a result of the injuries sustained in the accident. Authorities are still investing the accident for further details.

It’s a tragic but statistically supported fact that pedestrians are constantly on the lookout for their own lives. Cities can be a terrifying place for a pedestrian and really, Los Angeles is no exception. Between the lack of accessibility coupled with the disregard of drivers, pedestrians are simply among the most marginalized people around. In fact, according to California Governors Highway Safety Association, over 670 pedestrians are killed in Los Angeles alone each year. This is among the highest rate in the country. Further studies show that this number is on the rise, having climbed over 7% in a recent one-year period. But just because pedestrians are ignored and marginalized on the road, it certainly doesn’t mean that they don’t have rights. There are many laws in place that protect pedestrians from personal injury to wrongful death.
